Search and Rescue in the Grand Canyon

Hiking into the Grand Canyon this time of year is popular, but dangerous because remote areas and high temperatures can make search and rescue efforts difficult. First responders are further hampered by old technology, slowing down rescue efforts.

Summer temperatures and increased visitors can put a strain on personnel and resources used for search and rescue missions. The park has seen a 25 percent increase in visitors and an additional 250,000 cars since January.

How many satellites are orbiting Earth?

Thousands. There are about 1,265 active satellites, and a further 2,600 that are no longer active but that are still up there.

Who owns most of them?

Satellites are owned by private companies and governments alike. Of the active satellites today, the vast majority are US owned or affiliated (about 528). Russia and China have about 130 active satellites apiece. Of those 528 American satellites, 18 are for civil purposes, 229 are commercial, 160 are for the military, and 121 belong to the government.

Family of lost bushman will force him to carry a satellite phone

A hunter survived for six days by eating ants after getting lost in the Australian outback, and his story is now making international headlines. According to FOX Denver, Reginald Foggerdy, age 62, went on a hunting trip with his brother last week. The two were hunting in the Great Victoria Desert in Western Australia.

His story took a turn when he went off to hunt animals on Wednesday. At the time, he was wearing t-shirt, shorts, a cap, and flip flops. He was not dressed for a six-day journey in the desert. When he did not return to camp, a massive search by land and air began.

Pete Fletcher & Tom Hudson departed from New York in their row boat, the Macpac Challenger, on Thursday, May 21 to begin what would become an unforgettable 98-day, 14-hours and 44-minutes ‘Dare to Dream’ journey across the Atlantic Ocean to London.

The trip, a staggering 3,000-plus nautical miles of rowing, was set upon in support of the McGrath Foundation, one of Australia’s leading breast cancer support organizations.

Mexico’s Pacific coast on high alert

Patricia — the strongest hurricane ever recorded — barreled closer and closer Friday morning to Mexico’s Pacific coast, where residents have been told to brace for its 200-mph sustained winds and torrential rains.

The Miami-based meteorological center, in its 10 a.m. CT (11 a.m. ET) advisory, warned of a “potentially catastrophic landfall … in southwestern Mexico” late that afternoon or early evening. While its strength could fluctuate, “Patricia is expected to remain an extremely dangerous Category 5 hurricane through landfall.
